Planning the food

How much food do you need per person for Indian catering?

The honest answer is that it depends on the shape of your event, and it is worked out from your headcount when the menu is built. Here is what drives the quantity, and what to tell us so the menu comes back right the first time.

What decides how much food per person for Indian catering

There is no single figure that holds for every function, because a seated dinner, a grazing table and a late supper all eat differently. Raj's Corner works the quantities out from your guest numbers when the menu is put together, so the food lands in the right amount for the event you are actually running rather than a generic one.

Guest numbers
The starting point for everything. Give a firm count, or your best number and the date you will confirm it.
Style of service
A seated meal, a buffet people come back to, or a grazing table alongside other food all need different volumes.
Rice and breads
Rice and tandoor breads carry a lot of the meal. How much of each you want changes how much curry is needed.
Number of dishes
More curries on the table does not mean more food overall. It means smaller amounts of a wider range.
Length of the event
A two hour lunch and a function that runs all evening draw down very differently.
Dietary split
How many guests are vegetarian, vegan or eating gluten free shapes the balance across the menu.

Quantities come from your headcount, not from a template

Menus at Raj's are built per event rather than picked off a fixed list, and the amounts are set as part of that. Once the kitchen knows how many people are eating, how they are eating and what else is on the table, the volume of each dish follows from there.

That is also why it is worth saying early if you want something particular. Dishes such as dosa and biryani can be put on for catering even when they are not on the daily counter, as long as you ask at enquiry so the kitchen can plan the cooking around it.

Everything is cooked in the Beaumont Street kitchen at 116 Beaumont Street, Hamilton, and delivered to your venue. Nothing is cooked with MSG and nothing arrives frozen. The spices come from Raj's Spice and Groceries, the family's Indian grocery next door.

A shape that works for a crowd

Drawn from how the restaurant's own menu is built. It is a starting point for the conversation rather than a set list.

Curries across the heat range

Mild through to hot so every guest has something they will eat. The menu marks mild, medium hot and hot, and Beef Vindaloo is the only dish marked hot, so a table can be built confidently for people who do not like heat.

A vegetarian and a vegan option

Both sitting alongside the meat dishes and clearly marked, so vegetarian guests are eating the same meal as everyone else rather than a side plate put together at the last minute.

Rice and breads from the tandoor

Rice and naan do a lot of the work at a function. How much you want of each is one of the bigger levers on how much curry you actually need.

Entrees to start

Samosas, pakoras and chicken tikka give people something to eat while they arrive. Our samosas are made with pastry rolled on site.

Indian sweets to finish

Available by the kilo for events, with 34 varieties running on the sweets counter. Sweets are often the easiest part to scale up or down late.

Plenty to choose from

Twenty two curries are on display in the shop with around twenty more cooked to order, so the range you can pick from for a function is wide.

Tell us the numbers and we will do the maths

Send through the date, your guest numbers, the venue and any dietary requirements, and Raj's will put a menu and a price together for your event.

Three steps from enquiry to delivery

1. Tell us about the event

The date, how many guests, where the venue is and any dietary requirements. If the venue has no kitchen, say so, because a bain marie can be supplied for self serve functions.

2. We put a menu and a price together

Dishes chosen for your event, with the quantities worked out from your headcount and the way you are serving. Every dish carries GF, NF, DF and V codes, so dietary requirements are planned into the menu rather than handled on the night.

3. We cook it and deliver it

Cooked in the Beaumont Street kitchen and delivered to your venue. The kitchen cooks at a scale that feeds three hundred, so weddings, engagements, birthdays, anniversaries, christenings and corporate events across Newcastle and the Hunter are all within reach.

Questions people ask when they are planning

How much food per person should I order for Indian catering?

There is no single per person figure that holds across every function, and Raj's Corner will not quote one blind. How much food you need depends on whether it is a seated meal or a grazing table, how much of the meal is being carried by rice and tandoor breads, how long the event runs and how many of your guests are vegetarian. Raj's works the quantities out from your guest numbers when the menu is built for your event, so the amounts match what you are actually running. Give the date, the headcount, the venue and the dietary requirements at enquiry and the menu comes back with the quantities already worked out.

How many different curries should I order for a large group?

More curries does not mean more food, it means smaller amounts of a wider range, so the number of dishes is about variety rather than volume. A useful shape is curries across the heat range from mild to hot so everyone has something they will eat, with a vegetarian and a vegan option alongside the meat. The menu marks mild, medium hot and hot, and Beef Vindaloo is the only dish marked hot. There are twenty two curries on display in the shop and around twenty more cooked to order, so the range to choose from is wide. Tell Raj's your guest numbers and the kitchen will suggest how many dishes suits the group.

How much does Indian catering cost at Raj's Corner?

Raj's does not publish a catering rate, because menus are built per event rather than picked off a fixed list and the price follows the menu. To get a figure, send through the date, your guest numbers, the venue and any dietary requirements, and Raj's will put a menu and a price together for your event. You can start that on the catering page or by calling (02) 4962 1827 between 10:30am and 10:00pm, seven days.

What is the largest group Raj's Corner can cater for?

The Beaumont Street kitchen cooks at a scale that feeds three hundred. Raj's caters weddings, engagements, birthdays, anniversaries, christenings and corporate events across Newcastle and the Hunter, cooking everything at 116 Beaumont Street, Hamilton and delivering to your venue. Where a hall or a venue has no kitchen, a bain marie can be supplied so the food can be kept hot for self serve.

How are dietary requirements handled for a catered event?

Every dish at Raj's carries GF, NF, DF and V codes for gluten free, nut free, dairy free and vegan, so dietary requirements are planned into the menu rather than sorted out on the night. Raise them at enquiry along with your guest numbers, including how many guests are vegetarian or vegan, and the menu is built so those guests are eating properly rather than working around the table. The catering page is the place to start.
