Nine breads come off the tandoor wall at 116 Beaumont Street, Hamilton, from plain naan at $4.50 to cheese, garlic, potato and sweet coconut. The dough is made here every day and nothing is baked until you order it.
Raj's Corner bakes nine tandoor breads at 116 Beaumont Street, Hamilton. Plain naan and tandoori roti are $4.50, garlic naan is $4.90, and the stuffed breads run up to $6.90. Every one is slapped onto the tandoor wall after you order, so it reaches the table hot. Order for pick up, for delivery, or eat in the dining room.
The naan dough is made on site every morning, the same way the samosa pastry and the dips and sauces are. It rests, it gets rolled out by hand, and it goes onto the wall of the tandoor only once the order comes through. That is a couple of minutes of waiting and it is the reason the bread arrives puffed and still soft rather than reheated.
From the very first days in 1998 the shop was a counter with curries in trays behind the glass and breads pulled from the tandoor. That has not changed. Order a garlic naan with a bowl from the curry counter and you are eating the same two things people have been taking home from Beaumont Street for more than twenty five years.
Nothing is frozen and no dish is cooked with MSG. The spices come from Raj's Spice and Groceries, the Indian grocery next door.
All nine come out of the same tandoor. The difference is the flour, and what is folded inside.
Soft, pillowy flatbread baked in the tandoor. The one to order if you want something to tear and dip without another flavour in the way.
Soft, fluffy bread with a touch of garlic and coriander. The most ordered bread on the board, and the one most people mean when they search for garlic naan near me.
Soft and delicious cheese stuffed bread. It pulls apart while it is hot, so it is worth eating first rather than last.
Cheese and garlic together in the one bread, for the table that cannot agree on which of the two to get.
Soft naan loaded with grated cheese and the subtleness of sweet chilli sauce. Mild heat, more sweet than hot.
Minced flavoured chicken stuffed in a soft bread cooked with a touch of butter. Filling enough to eat as a meal with a bowl of raita.
Light bread made from premium whole meal flour. Drier and plainer than naan, and the one to ask for if you want less bread and more curry.
Indian traditional flatbread stuffed with spiced mashed potatoes. Good on its own with yoghurt, good alongside a dry vegetable dish.
Classic sweet bread filled with desiccated coconut and mixed dry fruits. It works with a hot curry and it works at the end of the meal.
Order ahead and pick it up on Beaumont Street, or have it delivered free after 5:00pm within 5km.
Vegetable mains run $10.90 to $16.90 and meat mains $11.90 to $19.90. Two breads and one curry feeds two people comfortably. Butter chicken and a garlic naan is the pairing we send out most.
Basmati rice is $5.50 to $7.50 and a biryani is a meal on its own. Plenty of people order both bread and rice, which is the sensible way to do it with a saucy curry.
Pappadums are $3.50 for four, raita is $4.50 to $6.00 and mint sauce is $4.50 to $6.00. A Peshwari naan with mint sauce is a better idea than it sounds.
Plain naan and tandoori roti are $4.50 each. Garlic naan is $4.90. Cheese naan and aloo paratha are $5.90. Combination naan, which is cheese and garlic together, and sweet chilli cheese naan are $6.50. Chicken naan and Peshwari naan are $6.90. Every bread is baked to order in the tandoor at 116 Beaumont Street, Hamilton.
Naan is a soft leavened white flour bread baked against the wall of the tandoor, which is why it puffs up and stays pillowy. Tandoori roti is made from whole meal flour and comes out lighter and drier, with a firmer chew. Order naan if you want something soft to tear and dip, and roti if you want less bread and more room for the curry.
No. Every bread on the board is made with wheat flour, so naan, tandoori roti and aloo paratha all contain gluten and none of them can be made gluten free. The curries are where the gluten free part of the menu sits, and each dish carries a GF code so you can order without asking. Basmati rice at $5.50 to $7.50 is the usual swap for bread.
Garlic naan at $4.90 goes with almost anything on the menu and is the bread most people order. For a hot curry, a Peshwari naan at $6.90 with its coconut and dry fruit takes the edge off the heat. For a dry vegetable dish, tandoori roti at $4.50 is the better match. A cheese naan at $5.90 tends to be the one children finish.
Yes. Breads can be ordered on their own online or over the phone on (02) 4962 1827, and they are baked when the order comes in rather than kept warm. Delivery is free after 5:00pm within 5km of the shop, and pick up on Beaumont Street is usually the fastest way to get the bread home while it is still hot. We are open 7 days, 10:30am to 10:00pm.
