Every dish on the Raj's Corner menu carries its dietary codes, so you can see whether something is gluten free before you order. Most of the curries are marked GF. The breads are not, and we say so plainly.
Yes, for most of the menu. Each dish at 116 Beaumont Street, Hamilton is printed with its dietary codes, GF for gluten free, NF for nut free, DF for dairy free and V for vegan. Most curries are marked GF and are served with basmati rice. Naan, roti and paratha are made from wheat flour and are not gluten free. If you have coeliac disease, read the kitchen note further down and speak to us before you order.
Indian cooking leans on rice, lentils, chickpeas and vegetables, and a traditional curry is thickened with onion, tomato, yoghurt or ground nuts rather than flour. That is why so many Indian dishes are naturally free of gluten. It is a useful cuisine to eat in when wheat is off the table.
The exceptions are consistent. Breads are wheat. Pastry items such as samosas and spring rolls are wheat. Some kitchens finish a sauce with flour or use a commercial paste, and a few dishes use a soy or malt based seasoning. None of that is guesswork here, because the code beside each dish on our menu tells you where it sits before you order.
Nothing on the menu is cooked with MSG and nothing arrives frozen. If you want to read how the sauces themselves are built, our curry page goes through them one by one.
These are the codes as they appear on our menu. Vegetable mains are $10.90 small, $14.90 medium and $16.90 large. Meat and seafood mains are $11.90, $17.90 and $19.90.
Vegetables Korma, Aloo Matar Paneer, Daal Tadka, White Cholay, Palak Paneer, Eggplant and Potato, Mixed Vegetables, Aloo Gobhi and Rajma Curry are each marked (GF) (NF) and MSG free. Several of these are also on our paneer dishes page.
Butter Chicken, Chicken Korma, Mango Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala and Kadai Chicken are marked (GF) (NF). Chicken Curry is marked (DF) (GF) (NF), so it is dairy free as well.
Lamb Korma is (GF) (NF). Lamb Madras and Lamb Rogan Josh are (DF) (GF) (NF). Beef Vindaloo is (DF) (GF) (NF) and Beef Korma is (GF) (NF).
Vegetable Pakora, 3 pieces $4.50 (V DF GF NF). Eggplant Pakora, 3 pieces $4.90 (GF V DF NF). Spicy Potato $3.90 (GF V DF NF). Chicken Tikka, boneless, $4.50 (GF NF). Tandoori Chicken $4.90 (GF NF). Pappadums are $3.50 for 4 pieces.
Samosas and spring rolls are made with pastry, so they are not gluten free. Fish Curry (I) is marked (NF) and MSG free but is not marked GF. Naan, roti and paratha are wheat flour.
Basmati rice is the swap, $5.50 for a small and $7.50 for a large. Biryani runs $17.90 to $18.90 and comes with yoghurt and salad. Combos start at $9.90.
Pick up from Beaumont Street, or have dinner delivered free after 5:00pm within 5km. If you need to check something first, the phone is the quickest way.
A gluten free label is only useful if it is honest about its limits, so here are ours.
GF beside a dish means the recipe contains no gluten ingredients. That is the claim we make, and it is the claim you can rely on when you are avoiding wheat by choice or for an intolerance.
One kitchen cooks everything, with a tandoor and wheat flour in it. We cannot tell you there is a separate gluten free preparation area, and we will not claim the kitchen is free of cross contamination.
If you have coeliac disease, call (02) 4962 1827 or speak to the counter before you order so the kitchen can advise you on the day. We would rather have that conversation than have you unwell.
A lot of it is, but not all of it. Indian cooking is built on rice, lentils, chickpeas and vegetables, and a traditional curry sauce is thickened with onion, tomato, yoghurt or ground nuts rather than flour, so many curries contain no gluten at all. The usual exceptions are the breads, which are wheat, and pastry items such as samosas and spring rolls. Some kitchens also use a flour thickener or a soy or malt based seasoning. At Raj's Corner Hamilton every dish carries a dietary code, GF gluten free, NF nut free, DF dairy free and V vegan, so you can see the status of a dish before you order rather than asking.
All nine vegetable mains are marked (GF) (NF) and MSG free: Vegetables Korma, Aloo Matar Paneer, Daal Tadka, White Cholay, Palak Paneer, Eggplant and Potato, Mixed Vegetables, Aloo Gobhi and Rajma Curry. On the meat side, Butter Chicken, Chicken Korma, Mango Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala and Kadai Chicken are marked (GF) (NF), Chicken Curry is (DF) (GF) (NF), Lamb Korma is (GF) (NF), Lamb Madras and Lamb Rogan Josh are (DF) (GF) (NF), Beef Vindaloo is (DF) (GF) (NF) and Beef Korma is (GF) (NF). Fish Curry (I) is marked (NF) and MSG free but is not marked gluten free. Vegetable mains are $10.90 small, $14.90 medium and $16.90 large. Meat and seafood mains are $11.90, $17.90 and $19.90.
No. Naan, roti and paratha are all made from wheat flour, and they cannot be made gluten free. We do not keep a gluten free flour or a gluten free bread, and the breads are baked to order in the same tandoor. If you are avoiding gluten, order basmati rice instead, $5.50 for a small and $7.50 for a large, or a biryani at $17.90 to $18.90 which comes with yoghurt and salad. You can see how the breads are made on our tandoori breads page.
We will not promise that, and here is why. The GF code marks the recipe, meaning the dish is made without gluten ingredients. It is one kitchen, though, with a tandoor and wheat flour in it, and nobody can tell you there is a separate coeliac safe preparation area or that there is no chance of cross contact. So the honest answer is that the recipes are gluten free but the kitchen is shared. If you have coeliac disease, call us on (02) 4962 1827 or speak to the counter before you order, describe how strict you need to be, and the kitchen can advise you on what it can and cannot do that day.
Start with an entree marked GF, such as Vegetable Pakora at $4.50 for 3 pieces, Eggplant Pakora at $4.90, Spicy Potato at $3.90, boneless Chicken Tikka at $4.50 or Tandoori Chicken at $4.90. Pappadums are $3.50 for 4 pieces. For the main, take any curry marked GF, Butter Chicken and Chicken Korma for something mild, Lamb Rogan Josh or Beef Vindaloo for more heat, or Palak Paneer or Daal Tadka if you are eating vegetarian. Have it with basmati rice rather than bread, $5.50 small or $7.50 large. Skip the samosas and spring rolls, which are pastry, and skip the Fish Curry (I), which is not marked GF.
We are at the Hamilton end of Beaumont Street. Order at the counter and eat in the dining room, no bookings needed, or take it away. The day's curries are cooked fresh that morning and kept hot so they are ready when you order, breads are baked to order in the tandoor, and anything on the menu can be cooked fresh to order if you ask.
