Fresh cottage cheese cooked into smooth spinach, simmered with potatoes and peas, folded into a dosa or baked through a naan. Made every day at 116 Beaumont Street, Hamilton.
Raj's Corner cooks palak paneer at 116 Beaumont Street, Hamilton. It sits in the vegetable mains at $10.90 small, $14.90 medium and $16.90 large, and it is marked gluten free and nut free like the rest of that section. Aloo matar paneer is there at the same prices, and paneer turns up again in the dosa and in the breads we bake to order.
Paneer is a fresh cottage cheese. It is mild, firm and set rather than melting, which is why it can be cut into cubes, put on a skewer or stirred through a sauce and still come out as pieces you can pick up on a fork. It carries spice instead of competing with it, so the spinach and the tomato do the talking.
In palak paneer the cubes go into spinach cooked down until it is smooth and creamy. In aloo matar paneer they sit with potatoes and peas in a tangy tomato gravy. Both are cooked medium hot, and both can be dialled to what you like when you order at the counter.
Nothing is frozen and nothing is cooked with MSG. The spices come from Raj's Spice and Groceries, the Indian grocery next door on Beaumont Street, and the paneer dishes sit alongside the rest of the curry counter, twenty two curries on display with around twenty more made to order.
Two curries, a dosa and three breads, plus the combos if you want more than one thing on the plate.

Choose up to three curries, on rice or without, in three sizes. Put palak paneer next to a daal tadka or a korma and try more than one thing in a sitting. A vegan combo runs alongside it.
Basmati rice is $5.50 to $7.50, plain naan is $4.50, raita is $4.50 to $6.00 and pappadums are $3.50 for four. Raita and paneer are a good pair if you have ordered medium hot.

Palak paneer is $10.90 for a small, $14.90 for a medium and $16.90 for a large. Aloo matar paneer is the same price in the same three sizes, because both sit in the vegetable mains. Paneer dosa is $17.90 and cheese naan is $5.90. Prices are for 116 Beaumont Street, Hamilton NSW 2303.
Paneer is a fresh cottage cheese used across North Indian cooking. It is mild and firm, and it holds its shape when cooked, so it stays in cubes in a curry rather than melting into the sauce. Because it is mild it takes on the flavour of whatever it is cooked in, which is why it works in spinach, in tomato gravy and in bread.
Paneer is a dairy cheese, so palak paneer, aloo matar paneer, paneer dosa and cheese naan are vegetarian but not vegan. For vegan dishes look for the V code on the menu: White Cholay, Eggplant and Potato, Mixed Vegetables, Vegetable Pakora, Eggplant Pakora, Onion Bhajee and Spicy Potato. There is a vegan combo from $9.90 as well as the vegetarian one.
Yes. Palak paneer and aloo matar paneer are both marked GF for gluten free and NF for nut free, and neither is cooked with MSG. If you order one with rice rather than naan, the meal stays gluten free. Every dish on the menu carries its own dietary codes, so check the code on anything you add.
Palak paneer and aloo matar paneer are both cooked medium hot as standard. Tell us when you order and the kitchen will adjust the heat. If you want something gentler, Vegetables Korma is mild and creamy and Daal Tadka is mild yellow lentils with butter, both at the same $10.90 to $16.90 prices. A raita at $4.50 to $6.00 cools the plate either way.
